From Spring to Summer

As the weather warms up, we move away from Spring racing and transition in to “Summer Racing” and we see a few subtle changes in the way we’re dressing for the races. My favourite way to update racewear at the moment is to add a touch of straw. We’ve been seeing straw crop up in our headwear over the past year with more and more people embracing the boater – but there are a couple of additional ways you can incorporate a touch of straw into your look.

The summer looks are perfect for events out in the country, with Fashion at The Races major events coming up at Coonawarra Vigneron's Day on January 12, Strathalbyn Cup on January 15, and Kangaroo Island Cup on February 18. With beautiful warm days, a lighter, more summery look is perfect for these events.

#1 – Switch up the boater for a slightly less structured hat.

As the weather warms up it's time to embrace the hat! With the sun shining it pays to be sun smart, but of course fashionable at the same time! If you want to steer away from the boater, try something a little less structured like this piece from 66 the label or some of the gorgeous new pieces from Sylvy Earl to give a bit more impact in the competition.

#2 – Swap the strappy sandals for a wedge

Nothing is as uncomfortable as feeling your feet sliding down your strappy sandals while you’re trying to keep your composure, and as the mercury rises, this only gets worse. This is why, in the summer months, the straw-look wedge is your best friend. Not only does it keep you from sinking into the grass, and not to mention being immeasurably more comfortable, but it’s a fantastic way to incorporate a bit of the straw trend into your look. I’m loving these wedges from husk with the two front straps to keep you from sliding but don’t cut your legs off.

#3 – Add a clutch

I have always found that the simplest way to update your outfit is with a new accessory, and aren’t novelty clutches just the most fun!? Adding in a little straw clutch bag gives you just the right about of playfulness to your outfit and makes the best talking point when held up next to your champagne glass. I’m loving this cute little number from Shopbop with the fringing around the outside. Planning on a full day at the races? Switch up your straw clutch for a full sized straw bag – there are so many cute options out there that are sure to handle all of your race day supplies with style and flare.

For Summer, you can try and pick dresses with more lightweight fabrics or flowier designers – to make sure that you keep nice and cool throughout the day or night. This gorgeous dress from Finders Keepers is absolutely perfect for the races and fits perfectly with another big trend this season – blush.
