5 minutes with the winner - Naracoorte Cup

The South East of the state is turning out to be somewhat of a fashion mecca in South Australia, with a string of events in the region so far this season bringing out some incredible style from the residents of the region.

The 2018 Minijumbuk Naracoorte Cup was enjoyed by hundreds of locals from the Limestone Coast, in particular the stylish men and women dressing their best for the Fashion at The Races competition.

Colour continued to shine this Summer season, with most of the finalists flashing bright colours and patterns on the stage. Ultimately the competition was taken out by Leah Habel, a student and barista hailing from Koroit in Victoria.

We spoke to Leah before she headed back home!

To win Fashion at The Races I wore: An outfit I designed myself and had made by a talented seamstress who lives in the South East of SA - paired with white Wittner heels, sourced from Millinery and Racewear for sale - Australia, jewellery from Leskes Jewellers in Port Fairy, and a red bag by Olga Berg.

I started coming to The Races when: I was a very little girl! My mum has always been a keen racegoer and I inherited that passion.

I couldn’t do a day trackside without: A form guide, comfortable heels and good company!

The last time I entered Fashions on the Field: Was Camperdown Cup in Victoria. I was lucky to receive Runner Up Lady of the Day.

My wardrobe looks like: It’s bursting at the seams! My Nana has made the majority of my racing outfits and I just can’t let them go due to sentimental value.

The most embarrassing thing I’ve ever worn is: A heavy percher headpiece that left a dent in my forehead and unable to open one eye properly. The photos still make laugh to this day!

My favourite thing I own is: A 1960s beautiful black vintage pillbox hat with veiling that I have inherited from my great auntie.

What people might not know about me: I am the founder and head administrator of Millinery and Racewear For Sale – Australia. I started this group in 2014 and never thought it would take off like it has!

Weekends look like: My other favourite hobby is riding and showing horses, so I am often competing at horse shows, or working towards that. I currently have an off the track thoroughbred who last raced in March 2017 and am in the process of educating her.

I love to indulge in: Wine and a good TV series on Netflix.

My kind of day out is: At the races with good company, good calibre racing and good wine!

My bucket list includes: Attending Royal Ascot.

I wish I could have a glass of bubbles with: Francesca Cumani. I respect her for her knowledge regarding the racing industry and her style is impeccable!

This year I am looking forward to: Campaigning my show horse and attending many more race meets.

I love The Races because: I can combine my passions - racing, beautiful horses and fashion!

Leah took home $1,000 cash and has qualified for the State Final for 2017/18. To see when you can next qualify for the Fashion at The Races State Final like Leah, see our full list of events here
