ALL DAY GLAM: YOUR GUIDE TO LONG-LASTING RACE DAY BEAUTY

Remember that time you walked into a nightclub powder room after midnight and felt a pinch of shock and envy when you noticed the girl next to you looking immaculate under fluorescent lighting in 80% humidity? Well, when it comes to racing, 3pm is the new 3am. If you venture out unprepared, a little sun and fun can all too quickly send your beauty look into a meltdown before the big race has even started.

If Carrie Bradshaw were still in action, we imagine she would pen something along the lines of “As the concept of everlasting love drifts further from our clutches in 2018, everlasting makeup has never been so attainable.” Likely, makeup tips are being thrown your way every time you open Instagram, but to save you some scrolling, FATR went directly to the experts at MEDIAMAKEUP and evo hair for beauty tricks that will have you looking more polished than the Cup.

Much like achieving fitness goals, great skin cannot be accomplished in a day.  MEDIAMAKEUP Program Developer and Trainer Kat Lean recommends implementing active skincare in your daily routine leading up to an event for a flawless base. “Daily work with a manageable and targeted skin care routine with non-abrasive exfoliants will help achieve a smoother complexion such as including AHAs, BHAs, Vitamin C and Retinol,” Kat said.

Now your skin is smooth and hydrated, it’s time to schedule your spray tan. To avoid the look of a messily-applied last minute tan, get the ideal skin glow by having a spray tan one or two days before an event to best develop the colour. “All de-fuzzing should be done 24 hours prior to your spray tan, as well as a really good exfoliation - preferably a dry scrub,” Kat said. “Your skin should be clean and free of all products at the time of your spray tan.”

Once your tan has processed, evo Creative Director Lauren McCowan wants you to maintain your skin’s moisture levels. “To keep a spray tan glowing, use the evo self indulgence body crème,” Lauren said. “This lightweight lotion leaves skin with a soft finish without the greasy feeling.”

On the morning of your makeup application, Kat advises against trying new products. If you are creating a smoky eye, apply your eye look first, so any shadow fallout can be wiped away. “If you're opting for a different look, start with primer, foundation and set with a HD micro finishing powder plus Mist & Fix by MAKE UP FOR EVER to ensure nothing budges,” Kat said. “Avoid smudging and transfer of mascara by opting for a waterproof product for special occasions.”

Although daily sun protection is of the utmost importance, be wary of applying an SPF underneath your makeup on the day. “SPFs are not the best companion to makeup and often cause the dreaded flashback (where your face looks whiter than your body),” Kat said.

To ace your day-appropriate smoky eye, start with a medium toned shadow in a brown or grey to best complement your eye colour, according to Kat. “To take it into the night, add some impact eyeliner, false lashes - and (not for the faint of heart) - some glitter for that added glitz,” Kat said.

For the gentlemen looking to refine their grooming skills, Lauren suggests two products for race day morning. “Uberwurst shaving crème is perfect for men who have a close, clean shave,” Lauren said. “The crème transforms into a cushioning mousse that softens hair and moisturises the skin,” she said.

“Alternatively, Winners face balm is a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser which absorbs into the skin quickly and it also helps reduce redness and razor burn.” For men with long beards, use a small amount of evo’s cassius styling clay for a natural finish with a strong hold, ideal for styling unruly beard hair.

If it’s your brows that are tough to tame, Kat recommends Mist & Fix O2 Spray to keep everything in place. “Natural wax is a great way to seal and insure your brow style,” Kat said.

Once you are preened, complete your beauty look with a popping pout. To ensure your lips are looking plump on the day, pay close attention to your water bottle the week prior. “Hydrate hydrate hydrate - drink plenty of water,” Kat said. “Try a lip scrub the night before and prep the lips with a nourishing lip serum prior to applying lippy on the day.”

For a long lasting lip look, Kat suggests Lip Paints for their low maintenance appeal. “They dry matte and don't budge and you can add gloss over the top if you prefer,” Kat said.

Before you depart for the track, pack your beauty bag with the touch up tools you need to refresh your look. Be sure to bring your blotting paper, a micro finishing powder and your lipstick for maintenance – you never know where a day at the races might take you.

On a warm day, Kat notices her contour and blush products can easily transfer to her phone screen when she makes a call. To avoid a smudged selfie, makeup transfer is best prevented with MAKE UP FOREVER ULTRA HD LOOSE POWDER and Mist & Fix to ensure nothing budges.

When it’s time to order an Uber and kick off your heels, be sure to give your skin some love. To unwind at the end of a long race day, Lauren introduces your new favourite shower companion. “Evo’s soap dodger body wash is the perfect shower gel that gently cleans to leave your skin feeling fresh.”

Much like a marathon, recovery is a major part of your racing beauty routine.

Remove your race day glam with your usual beauty products or have a back-up plan if you are lacking the necessary coordination for proper cleansing; we won’t judge you.

“If you're feeling lazy, set yourself up for success by keeping some makeup remover wipes on your bedside table,” Kat said. “Be kind, follow a good skincare routine everyday but give your skin a break,” she said. “Go makeup-free for the day.”

While your skin is in recovery mode, plan your next racing glam with our guide to creating a perfect pout and a winning bronzed smoky eye and set yourself up to sizzle at the races this summer.
